A Roman Empire by the Sea

Like so many of Atlantic City’s famous casinos, Caesars Atlantic City’s origins date back to the mid-Seventies, when casino gambling was legalized in the city. Having already enjoyed considerable success with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Caesars decided set up a similar establishment in Atlantic City.

To this end, it purchased the Howard Johnson’s Regency Motor Hotel in 1977. Whereas as many of Atlantic City’s existing buildings had been demolished to make way for casinos (most notably, the Bally’s Casino), the Regency Hotel was itself barely a decade old at that point.

This meant that, rather than tearing it down and starting from scratch, Caesars could instead simply renovate and expand the existing building. By the time the Caesars Boardwalk Regency opened on June 16, 1979, Caesars had added another seven stories to the building. This added a further 123 rooms to the hotel, as well a 52,000 sq ft casino. And as with its Vegas namesake, the hotel was lavishly styled with a distinct Roman theme, to ensure all those who stayed and gambled there felt like a Roman emperor.

Over the coming decades, the hotel would continue to expand and evolve. In 1987, the name was changed to Caesars Atlantic City. Ten years later, the hotel’s capacity was given a sizable boost when the 25-storey Centurion Tower opened, adding a further 610 rooms.

Renovations throughout the late Nineties and early 2000s saw the outward appears of the hotel change to reflect the interior’s Roman styling. So what had once been quite a modern-looking building now has the outward appearance of a Roman palace!

Gambling at Its Imperial Best

As with its Vegas counterpart, there’s nothing quite like gambling at Caesars. The casino floor measures some 13,500m² (2145,000 sq ft), and plays host to a variety of gambling options.

The main casino offers 135 different table games. These cover all the usual staples, such as various kinds of poker, craps, baccarat, roulette and blackjack. Table limits can reach as high as $50,000 on some games as well. The second floor of the casino is given over to slots, with Caesars offering more than 3,000 of them. Caesars also has Palace East, an Asian gaming area featuring a further 25 table games, including pai gow poker. Finally, there’s also the Racebook, where gamblers can bet on horse races.

A World of Luxury

The hotel itself certainly knows how to pamper and impress its guests. The main entrance to Caesar’s Palace Casino is a splendid marble column. Inside, the top four-storey atrium gives you the impression of standing in a Roman Square underneath an evening sky.

With a current capacity of 1,158 lavishly decorated rooms, this makes it one of the bigger hotel-casinos in Atlantic City, and one of its most luxurious. Available rooms start with the sumptuous deluxe rooms, and extend all the way through to the no-expense-spared glamour of the senator suites.
